Insurers write off Air Bagan ATR 72 that went off runway

Insurance assessors have written off an Air Bagan ATR 72-210 that was severely damaged following an aborted take-off late last month from an airport in northern Myanmar.
Phoenix Aircraft Leasing in Singapore leased the aircraft to Air Bagan and the leasing firm’s managing director, Tony Griffin, confirms that the insurance company has decided to write off the ATR 72-210. The aircraft carried a local registration of XY-AIE and manufacturer’s serial number of 458.
On 19 February the aircraft was departing from the airport at Putao in far northern Myanmar but ended up off the end of the runway.
Pictures of the damaged aircraft show it on a slope at the end of the runway with a crack through the mid-fuselage plus the rear cone had come off.
Griffin says the aircraft was on its take-off roll when a failure indicator showed that one of the engines was not working and the pilot aborted the take-off. He adds that by that stage the nose gear had become airborne and the aircraft was about 3,700ft (1,130m) down the 7,000ft-long runway.
The aircraft was unable to stop in time and the damage occurred when it went down the slope, he adds.
Phoenix Aircraft Leasing leases other ATRs and two Airbus A310s to Air Bagan.
Griffin says his company is now seeking to secure another ATR 72 to lease to the carrier.

Transall C-160 cargo aircraft erupts in flames in Indonesia

A Transport Allianz Transall C-160 cargo aircraft operated by Indonesian carrier Manunggal Air Service was gutted by fire yesterday soon after landing at an airport in west Papua.
The two pilots, a flight engineer and three loadmasters escaped safely from the aircraft which caught fire at 08:36 yesterday at Wamena airport in west Papua moments after completing a flight from the west Papuan city of Jayapura, Manunggal Air Service operations manager Tjonhar Azya says from the airline’s offices in Jakarta.
He says the chartered cargo flight and was carrying diesel and jet fuel.
The aircraft had touched down at Wamena and was taxiing when the control tower informed the pilots that “smoke and fire could be seen coming from the left side landing gear”.
“They asked the pilot to taxi to the apron…and they taxied to an area …and stopped the aircraft and set down everything.”
When the pilots got out of the aircraft they could see “the landing gear was in smoke and fire and they tried to put it out with fire extinguishers but the fire kept increasing and then the fire brigade came to try and put out the fire but the fuselage kept burning”.
Television footage taken at the airport shows the aircraft engulfed in flames, thick black smoke billowing, and at one point, a large fireball shoots out of the aircraft and into the sky.
Pictures taken after the fire was extinguished shows the aircraft’s main fuselage was completely destroyed and all that remains is the aircraft’s nose, rear empennage, wings and engines.
The aircraft that was destroyed, local registration PK-VTQ, was one of four C-160s in Manunggal’s fleet. Tjonhar says of the remaining three, two are in service and one is parked permanently at Jakarta airport.
He says the airline plans to keep its other C-160s and adds it is a good aircraft because “it is very easy to handle” and on the Jayapura-Wamena route can carry 10t of cargo.
The C-160 was built by a consortium of French and German aircraft manufacturers which developed the aircraft in the mid-1960s as a military transport.
Today the aircraft is still in service with the French, German and Turkish air forces.

Adam Air 737 skids off runway at Batam

An Adam Air Boeing 737 skidded off the runway at Batam in Indonesia earlier today resulting in damage to the landing gear.
The airline’s president, Adam Suherman, says that at around 10:40 one of the carrier’s 737-400s skidded off the runway at Batam, which is an island near Singapore.
There were no fatalities and all 170 passengers were evacuated from the aircraft which had arrived in Batam from Jakarta, says Suherman, who was unable to confirm if there were injuries.
The aircraft ended up “10m from the runway” and the landing gear is damaged, says Suherman, adding that it is in soft ground.
Suherman says the aircraft has a local registration of PK-KKT. According to Flight’s ACAS database it is owned by CIT and has a manufacturer’s serial number of 24353.
He says “it was raining at the time but we don’t know what caused” the aircraft to skid off the runway and the matter is now subject to investigation.

Boeing investigates as Saudi 777 lands with wing damage

Boeing has sent a team of specialists to Saudi Arabia to assist with investigating an incident in which a Saudi Arabian Airlines 777-200ER suffered damage to its starboard wing during a service to Riyadh last week.
While details of the incident are sketchy, the aircraft was operating the domestic Jeddah-Riyadh route on 10 March.
Video images recorded by a passenger on board the aircraft clearly show a structural component protruding through the upper wing surface, forward of the aircraft’s inboard spoilers.
The location of the damage suggests it has occurred directly above the area where the starboard main landing-gear leg meets the wing.
Commentary accompanying the video indicates that the there was a loud bang next to the passenger’s window a few minutes before landing. It is unclear whether this coincided with the extension of the undercarriage.
The video images show the flaps in landing configuration and various spoilers responding as the aircraft touches down; one of the outboard spoilers appears to stay in its deployed position, while some others remain stowed. There is also evidence of spray suggesting loss of hydraulic fluid from severed lines.
A spokesman for Boeing’s 777 programme says: “We are aware of an incident with a Saudi Arabian Airlines 777 that occurred upon landing recently.
At the invitation of the Saudi Arabian authorities, Boeing has sent a team to assist in the investigation.”
Neither Saudi Arabian Airlines nor the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the kingdom’s air transport regulator, could be reached for comment.
Unconfirmed indications point to the aircraft being an 11-year old example registered HZ-AKB. The carrier owns all of its 777s; the Saudi fleet is powered by General Electric GE90 engines.

Bird strike is possible factor in deadly Cessna crash

The National Transportation Safety Board suspects a bird strike could have been the cause of a crash involving a 1975 Cessna Citation I on 4 March after taking off from Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City.
The Board's invstigators have taken residues from the horizontal and vertical stabiliser of the Cessna Citation I and these have been sent to an ornithologist at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC for identification.
Eye witness accounts suggest that the aircraft flew into a flock of birds as it climbed through 3,100ft (937m) and that white bird body parts fell to the ground shortly after the crash.
Footage from a security camera at a power company located approximately 0.8km (0.5 mile) southwest of the accident site reveals "that the airplane descended to the ground while in a near vertical position" while emitting a smoke contrail, according to the NTSB's preliminary report.
One witness, a former US Air Force crew chief, reported grey smoke trailing from the right Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-1 engine. The crew made no distress calls, say NTSB investigators.
According to the FAA, the number of wildlife strikes reported annually in the USA has quadrupled over the past 17 years, rising from 1,743 in 1990 to 7,089 in 2006, with 97.5% of those strikes attributed to birds.
Over the same period, the FAA says that five of seven wildlife strikes that caused nine human fatalities were attributed to unidentified species of birds. The FAA says the aircraft components most frequently damaged in collisions with birds are engines.
The Smithsonian's Feather Identification Lab is called upon to investigate approximately 3,000 bird strikes per year, attempting to identify the type of bird involved based on carcasses, feathers or most recently, DNA samples sent to the lab.

Cirrus Dornier 328 damaged as it veers off Mannheim runway

German investigators are examining a Cirrus Airlines Dornier 328 turboprop which suffered serious damage after overrunning the runway while landing at Mannheim City Airport.
The aircraft had been operating flight C9 1567 from Berlin Tempelhof. It touched down on schedule at 17:45 yesterday but, for reasons unknown, overran the far end of runway 27 and came to rest at the perimeter bank.
The Pratt & Whitney Canada PW119-powered aircraft lost its entire left propeller in the accident and sustained damage to its left wing.
But Saarbrucken-based Cirrus Airlines says the 24 passengers and three crew members were uninjured and left the aircraft by its boarding stairs.
The 32-seat aircraft is registered D-CTOB. It was manufactured in 1999 and has been in the Cirrus fleet since last year.
Meteorological data for Mannheim City Airport – which has a relatively short runway, at about 1,000m (3,280ft) – shows no significant weather conditions were good at the time. Visibility was good with moderate winds from the northeast.
Following a Dornier 328 overrun incident in Aberdeen in 2006, UK investigators this year advised German regulators to develop training programmes alerting Dornier 328 crews to the possibility of throttles jamming during the landing roll.

Ryanair 737 skids off of runway in France

A Ryanair (Dublin) Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway at the regional airport of Limoges in France late Friday afternoon. Flight 1216, from the Belgian town of Charleroi, failed to stop before the end of the runway and went several meters in to the grass. Jean-Pierre Limousin, chairman of the chamber of commerce that manages Limoges airport, said, “A build-up of rain water on the runway seems to have caused the aircraft to slide on the slick tarmac.” Of the 186 passengers aboard the flight, only 6 reported slight injuries.
