Beginning of a new era in Malév network

In response to the rising cost of oil and as a result of the general world economic slowdown, Malév intends to concentrate its capacity and resources on the European network in future, in the process strengthening its regional market position. Accordingly, it is cancelling the operation of its loss-making long-haul flights from the start of the winter timetable this year.

In future the airline intends to focus resources on its network in Europe, thereby strengthening its regional market position. Taking this into consideration and in response to the latest challenges facing the airline industry, Malév is restructuring its fleet. The European network will be covered partly by its tried and trusted medium-haul B737 NG fleet, and partly by the cost-efficient, environmentally-friendly Q400 turboprop planes flying to regional destinations from the beginning of this year’s winter timetable. These turboprops will replace the CRJs as well as Fokker 70 planes that are being taken out of service on a stage-by-stage basis from December 2009.

As part of the restructuring the airline is withdrawing its two B767s from the fleet and at the same time the loss-making long-haul routes are being closed down. Parallel with the restructuring of its fleet Malév is also repositioning its route network to concentrate on the growing markets of Eastern Europe. Malév will maintain its presence in the region as a dynamic and flexible, leading airline capable of reacting rapidly to shifting market demands. This objective is supported by the advantageous geographical position of its Budapest hub airport.


Malev will still offer its customers access to a truly global network through its membership of oneworld, the world's leading quality global airline alliance, whose members collectively serve almost 700 destinations in some 150 countries, with flight connections as smooth as possible and Duna Club priveleges extended across this network.


The carrier currently operates to two destinations in North America: New York and Toronto. Due to rising kerosene prices, today the operational cost of making a single Budapest–New York–Budapest flight by B767 is HUF 7 million (USD 49,000) more than one year ago. The last flight on the Toronto route departs Budapest on 21 September, and the final New York service takes off from Budapest on 25 October. The major hike in expenditure makes it completely unviable for an airline the size of Malév to operate long-haul services economically. Furthermore, the present negative trends in the industry do not favour the development of the conditions necessary for a possible successful future operation.


Soaring costs are throwing even the strongest global airlines into unparalleled crisis. In response they are continually cutting back on the number of flights and on capacity, introducing increasingly stringent cost-cutting programmes, while companies are being forced to implement layoffs as well.


Malév continues to provide customers with all the advantages of legacy airlines, supplying its business and economy passengers with a punctual and reliable service into and out of central airports with, in many instances, several flights a day.


Malév customers can continue to travel to the United States with a Malév ticket and Malév code on flights operated by its oneworld partner American Airlines. The alliance and code-share partner of the Hungarian national carrier links Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt and Zurich with New York and Chicago.


Malév will ensure that passengers holding valid tickets to New York or Toronto get to their destinations on the flights of other carriers. For those travellers who have a reservation but have not yet paid for their air tickets, Malév can provide an alternative route through another European transfer hub. The airline is also willing to refund the cost of the airfare.
